Ahh, those were the days. Bing's voice, a gorgeous song, Dorothy looking so beautiful and a lovely set - who needs CG explosions and destruction to make great cinema?
My dad favored Bing and was a pretty good singer (no way as big league as Bing!) In my mind, I can still see him dancing with my sister and singing this song to her. I lost him in '63 and songs like this still manage to break my heart again.
This song belongs to Bing. After 60 years - still touches me. He did not try any embellishments to the songs, so the purity of what the composer intended comes though as he would have wished
Jimmy Van Heusen, who collaborated on this song with Johnny Burke, wrote many hits for Crosby, who also introduced The Second Time Around in his 1960 film High Time. Van Heusen also successfully joined his talents with Sammy Cahn to write many of Frank Sinatra's greatest hits, including the Oscar winning All The Way, for Sinatra's film The Joker Is Wild, Call Me Irresponsible, The Tender Trap, Come Fly With Me and I Fall In Love Too Easily, as well as My Kind Of Town.
The fabulous "trio" of Bing Crosby, Jimmy van Heusen (Chester Babcock), and Johnny Burke couldn't be matched anywhere, anytime.....The beautiful songs composed especially for Bing's unmistakable voice and charm by Jimmy and Johnny were works of art. Bing's numbers added to the wonderful pairing of him and Bob Hope and Dorothy in the fabulous "Road" pictures meant instant success at the box office!! Those were the days.........so much fun to watch them all - over and over and over.
the just so genuinely, naturally beautiful Dorothy Lamour, the crooning vocals of the finest singing gentleman, Bing Crosby, the spotlight for romance, the Moonlight... this is the most perfect combination of beauty, charm, song, and romance... nothing has, or ever will, surpass this performance, this vision... I believe for most who experience it, will leave with a softer, kinder, more loving heart...
