Our granddaughter is the FOURTH generation to love these songs! I'm grateful to my parent for sharing Burl Ives with me and our children and granddaughter! We still sing them sometimes whilst gardening. Saw him in person & it was a thrill!

Suddenly, for just a minute it was 1965 again, and I'm in Mrs Shannon's 2nd grade class. :-)

The liner notes list 1957 as the copyright date for this song, which is interesting. The MGM Wizard of Oz film was HUGELY popular at this time, having been re-released to theaters in 1956, and also making its network TV debut that same Christmas. There's a STRONG resemblance between the choral refrain of "Lollipop Tree" (the "ha-ha-ho" section) and the "Merry Old Land of Oz" (""..and a couple of tra-la-la's"). I think similarity was intentional...and adds to the innocent fun of this tune.

Memories!!! I vividly remember hearing this song played regularly on the "Captain Kangaroo" program way back around 1957 or so. I was so excited because our neighbor in Cincinnati, who had planted a tree in the Fall in his front yard, told me that it was a "lollipop tree". I patiently waited until the following summer to see if lollipops grew on that tree. If only I could be a little boy again!

I loved this in elementary school, but I just thought it was a kids folk song. I never knew a legend like Burl Ives sang it!

I learned this in senior infants ( aged 5) and I used to love this song I’m nearly 14 now. So nostalgic.
