Male singers rarely push a song along side the emotion with which it was written. Johnnie Ray was an artist with a unique style all his own. He really felt each song and gave it his all. He was my Mum's favourite singer - and now...years later, I know why.

One of the greatest singers ever. He lived every song that he sang. Johnnie Ray was a fabulous performer. He really was a trail.blazer.

When "Cry" hit the air. I worked in a record store. We couldn't find it on the Billboard Listing. It was original recorded on OKEH (Columbia) as listed under country. When Columbia realized what a hit this was becoming they immediately re-released it under the Columbia label and the rest is history. he literally changed the way male singers delivered a song. He was outed and his career suffered so. Today that wouldn't happen but in the 50's gay was death knell

Proof once again what the older generation keep saying. Johnny Ray was a singer and not a noise maker such as we have today. I recall this song hitting the market.

I saw him at the London Palladium circa 1956 and he was an absolute sensation, breaking all box office records. He was magnificent on stage and his audience were as exhausted as he must have been at the end of the show.
