This guy has got this down to perfection and its an anthem for million of dads who seemed to like it more than women. My dad was a truck driver and the six week school holidays he used to come home to pick me up and i would go with him delivering carpets to shops all over the uk and this song has stuck in my mind ever since. My father was killed before his time and every single time i hear this song it makes me weep. I love you sooo much dad - we were robbed of more time together and for that i am in pieces xxxx

I attended one of his concerts at Tupperware center in Kissimmee, Florida back in the early eighties. Mr. Whittaker was pure gold' the audience didn't want to let him go' he was very nice and appeared outside the auditorium after the show and greeted people before they left' he was so nice.

Every night after dinner myself and my grandparents play cards, he is the soft warm voice that sings in the background amongst the crackle of the record player and soft specks of the warm fire in the winter. He will make my grandparents memory last in me forever whenever I listen to him. I'm lucky to still have them around and in good health. May his music play merrily in my home for years to come

All of us must sooner or later leave Old Durham Town.  Our hope is that we will leave with no remorse and that the people there will be sad to see us go. It that comes to pass we can look back with pride and be happy that we have passed this way.

This takes me back to being a kid in the 70's when Mum & dad looked after us & we didn't have a care in the world. It's strange how songs like this spark that little bit of comfort back to life again & makes you feel all warm inside. Definately better days in the world back then for sure.

Wow, so many on here like me who associate this song with a wonderful childhood memory! For me, I.remember driving with my grandparents and other relatives who were visiting from overseas. I was riding in my dad's 1979 Cutlass Supreme, which I thought was a classy car compared to my mom's 1972 Le Mans. We were on our way to visit a mansion and it was a perfect summer day and I was so happy to have my favorite relatives from both sides of the family together that day. I saw my grandparents once every 2 years during summer vacation. I loved them so much and always being apart has always been a pain I have carried with me. When I hear this song ot reminds me of how safe I felt as a child, how carefree life was and how people were kinder to one another. And if I close my eyes and block out all other thoughts, for just one second I am back in the car, happy to be a kid, surrounded by love. I think Mr. Whitaker would be so pleased to hear the many wonderful memories this song has created for so many. ❤⚘

In April of 1979 I was a 19-year-old Mormon missionary from America riding a train from Leeds to Newcastle when suddenly out the window was a gorgeous castle. I turned to see the sign at the station -- Durham. It then hit me -- this was "the place" of one of my favorite songs... A moment forever etched in my memories... Thank you Roger Wittaker!
