Yet I have never heard it played as a Christmas song on the radio. Too intellectually challenging.

anyone notice... we find out "how men who've never seen light" can be enlightened. it happened from within... from out of his silence and Tommy's inner self.

1:53 is the first I had ever heard of The Who. It was trippy as hell and an amazing musical piece. So... I decided to eat 9 grams of shrooms and listen to the entire album. Yeah... It went as well as you would expect. 3:03 is the exact musical movement that set off my bad trip and by 3:12 I was in full on PANIC mode. I seriously lost my shit when the song got to that musical movement. The guitar chords during that section were so unsettling and disparaging that I literally had a bad trip and became convinced that I wasn't breathing after listening to that music... Which makes it one of my favorite songs of all time. If a song was powerful enough to send me into a full blown bad trip, then it is one of my favorite songs automatically!

'How can men who've never seen light be enlightened'. I think we'd all be surprised.  This song brings up so many great universal issues.

I have always assumed Pete wrote the lyrics. But it sure has John's style.

When The Who recorded "A Quick One" they couldn't arrange for the cello section they wanted for one of the song segments, so they vocalized cello-cello-cello-cello instead.  With this song they sing gobble-gobble-gobble-gobble to conjure up images of a Christmas turkey dinner. Presumably because they were not able to arrange for live turkeys in the studio.

Tommy for me is half about Moons hilariously genius drumming throughout and the other half is the rest of the band, lyrics, singing etc. But Keiths drumming is only part of the overall majesty of the percussion heard on Tommy. The tuning and the miking of Moons Premier kit is also completely incredible and as revolutionary as his playing. Nobody before or since in recorded music had toms that had such depth and resonance. Pete Townshend didn't consider Keith a proper drummer in the "normal" definition of the word. What Moon did to the drums was something not akin to actually drumming according to Pete. He's correct on both accounts. Moon was a supreme innovator on the drumkit and what made sense to him as far as tuning the kit and where to place the accents and beats and fills were all done in the service of the music the Who were making as a whole as Moon saw fit. I think Townshend knew exactly how lucky he was to have such an adventurous percussionist to help separate the music the Who were making from all that had come before or since.
