I was driving from Gallup NM To Albuquerque the first time I heard this. It was only days after I'd learned that WZ had passed. I had to pull off the road 'cause I couldn't see through the tears.
The version by Warren Zevon beats anybody's hands down...... it was straight from the heart and soul..... & he was truly knocking on heaven's door when he recorded The Wind album..... such a wonderful soul.....
bought a notepad at a thrift store, and inside the cover it reads, "When the day comes and I leave this planet, a song in my honor - Keep me in your Heart by Warren Zevon.
One of the great songwriters of the last 50 years, a true ROCKER, with a Heart of Gold. Warren did not suffer Fools but he was brutally honest with clear intelligent eyes that could cut through to the truth of the situation. He was also a consummate musician, a true craftsman that never stopped working. The world is better off for having him in it. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to see him live many times and to hang and talk with him too. RIP Warren, Thanks for the life lessons.
Warren Zevon is definitely not underrated. Everyone who has ever heard him knows he's the songwriter's songwriter. Equal to Dylan, Springsteen, Waits, Hyatt, Van Zant, Prine... He's not underrated but underappreciated.
Can any of you imagine the sheer raw courage it took for Warren to perform this song? To not only sing it with his usual strength and passion, but to drag it forth from the very depths of his soul, fuelled by the insight that he was, indeed, "knockin' on heaven's door"? Brave? Oh yes, that he most certainly was. But he was also incredibly unselfish, knowing with the often astonishing insight which was Warren's hallmark throughout most of his life, that this song, recorded by him at such a time, would be an inspiration to others facing their final days. I only hope when it comes my turn to knock on heaven's door, that I will do it with even one one hundredth of his courage and grace. And that Warren himself will be there to ".. open up for me".
