An elderly sailor, realizing his time is nearing its end, tosses the mollusk into the sea off a pier and watches his ship sail away into the fog...
...During the "I'm Dancing in the Show..." reprise: Years later, a young child stumbles upon the mollusk shell while walking along the beach. He picks it up and walks away. Just like the album/story also began.
This is what I picture. One of my favorite albums ever.

I feel like this songs not about a pirates wife or lover leaving but instead maybe the song is from the point of view of a pirate that raised a young girl. She is now old and wants to adventure away from her father. In total tho it dosent just have to be pirates this is about the effects of loss on a person and how not only he or she feels in the long run but how the person leaving is. Always fascinating to look at the lyrics and speculate what the song could be about. What do you think it means everyone?

What if you are supposed to listen to the album backwards, and it's about a dude that loses his girl. Then experiments with various hallucinogenic drugs, has a bad trip and slowly slips into dementia. Like In polka dot tail he comes to for a little bit, but by dancing in the show tonight there is no more hope for him and he is gone forever

This song and its hidden track, to me, ties the album together. The albums about a sailor/pirate whos heart is broken one day and results to alcohol, drugs, and reckless sex. In the end, he joins a circus show, completing his downward spiral
