and all the people passing by
to hear you play your music
of a big old band
Way back up in the woods, that the drivers made
made of earth and wood
By the railroad track, country boy can play
Country boy can play, til the sun go down
Goode tonight, deep down in louisiana
But he can play a guitar, just like ringing a bell, guitar in a gunny sack
Close to new orleans, but he can play a guitar
His mother told him, let johnny go
Strumming with the rhythm, named johnny b, say it again
Named johnny b, til the sun go down, made of earth and wood
way back up in the woods
named johnny b
Saying johnny b, of a big old band
that the drivers made
Deep down in louisiana, that the drivers made, and all the people passing by
goode tonight
made of earth and wood
Country boy can play, your name would be in lights
I used to sneak into clubs as a teenager when he played with this configuration starting in 1985. The first time was this dive biker bar in Spring Valley NY, an older boyfriend came with me. I was blown away. I leaned right up against the stage, which was not as loud as a few steps behind thankfully, and watched him play 5 feet in front of me.
I was stunned. I knew right at that moment this was the greatest guitar playing of this style I would ever see. My friends were all into boy bands at the time and they couldn't get it. I am so glad I saw him perform, probably 5-6 times total. But that first time in a tiny club was incredible, it was like a personal concert in a living room. Memory Eternal, Johnny.
As much as I love Jimi (God bless him), Winter is a bloody demon with that guitar!
I don't know why he's so underrated. Here in Italy I've never heard of him on the TV, NEVER.
I discovered him thank to my mum (she's a blues geek) and he's super cool!
Seen him less than a year or so before his death in his home town Beaumont TEXAS at the Jefferson Theater. Had to be helped on stage and had to sit to play. But when he began it was awesome. RIP Johnny Winter.
I am sorry for anyone who can think that this man , in his prime , was nothing less than breathtaking ability and Texas swagger from the git go. Dammit, there will never be another John Dawson Winter 3rd ever again and its a shame for those who do not know this man's contribution.......
