I had an opportunity to see Johnny live in August of 1990 when he was scheduled to play at Navy Island in St Paul, MN. Well, he was a no-show so I went over to the other stage to watch Stevie Ray Vaughan. SRV completely blew me away, he was so damn good. A month later he was dead. RIP Stevie. Still sucks that I never saw Johnny live.
In my opinion, this was one of the greatest guitar driven albums in rock history. As a learning tool for a beginning guitarist, you had the advantage of Rick Derringer coming out of the left channel and Johnny Winter coming out of the right channel, making it easy to decipher all of the guitar parts on the entire recording.
It was a truly inspired idea for Rick Derringer to add female backup singers when he re-released this song, but the guitar solo on this version is just friggin' un-touchable. God bless you, Johnny Winter!
~ I've always much preferred this version over the Derringer version. I realize Derringer is on this, but Winter's version (this one) is SO much better.
the guitar in the left channel is Rick Derringer and the guitar in the right channel is Johnny Winter. No overdubbing was needed to create one of the greatest rock guitar songs ever.
I am not sure why it is important to rank guitarists or arrangements of songs. I have 50 favorite guitarists all for different reasons. I also enjoy at least 6 different versions of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love. I don't need one to be better than the others. Just a thought.
I'll never forget seeing Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer at the Santa Monica Civic around 1969. Together, they pulled off some rRiffs that made my hair stand on end. Johnny Winter was at his peak and looked like a wizard, gliding across the stage with his white hair flowing. I saw him many years later down in Hollyweird. He could still rip, but needed to sit in a chair. I feel so honored to have seen him live. He proved that blues and soul doesn't have a color.
