For as significant as LaFaro’s influence is, he’s remarkably underrated as a player. Who was playing this way before him, especially within the context of a “straight ahead” trio? Yet so few people know anything about him.
Ok just listened to 3 versions from 3 different periods and one other pianist Salvatore Bennefido in the Gomez Trio 2011 (ain't YOU Tube great) and can say I prefer this the most relaxed unforced and organic.
Lafaro is like 2 city blocks behind the beat, yet, he is a sharp-shooter
and can nail any target threatening bill who is 2 blocks ahead of him. Gangster AF.
