after all these years I find this isan original and the it is covered by Clyde McPhatter I found this out at Songs with an earlier history check it out
he co wrote this I heard. Benton was great, and has been really forgotten. An easy Rock Hall pick, if someone'd actually make his case or bother to remember him.
This is Brook's original 1958 demo of the song. Atlantic liked the arrangement so much that they used the same musicians and the same bass singer for Clyde McPhatter's hit version on their label. It's available on Jasmine's 2 CD set - "The Early Years 1953-1959.
I discovered "A Lovers Question" not through Brook Benton or Clydesdale McPhatter, but on an obscure homage album So Fine by Loggin's and Messina (1975), a wonderful album that has so many early hits done as close to the originals as anyone could do, a true tribute to fantastic song writers and artists. It's so uplifting to hear Brook Benton song " I Wanna Be With You ( Everywhere You Go)" in the new Lincoln SUV commercial, it's perfect, and the remastering makes it so fresh, yet truly let's the time period pour through.
