While discussing decor styles for a Victorian house, the aspidistra house plant came up, so I just had to play this to my family. They were mightily amused! Thanks for posting it here.
Gracie Fields was a beautiful Person. My favorite song of hers was 'The Isle of Capri' in which she sang the part of a man who loved a young woman who was evidently already committed to another.
It is always nice to see the different photos from your collections, and the quality of this recording is just delightful. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us.
A very powerful radio station was used by the British to intrude on German broadcasts and even night fighter plane directions. Since it was 600,000 kilowatts and the biggest in the world, it was called Aspidistra. By the end of the war there were five of them.
I remember well as a child in England, visiting households where, in the hallway at the foot of the stairs, was the symbol of their success in life. It was easy to look after as it needed little sunlight, but it has absolutely no attractive qualities - it was dingy and dark, but it was their symbol of satisfaction. Its size was almost a measure of their status in society. It was, of course, their Aspidistra. Music Hall Artists could use it to poke fun at this English version of "Keeping up with the Jones's".
Its a song that shows Our Gracie's amazing versatility in song, from comedy to pure opera, no-one has had this ability since and probably never will again, she was brilliant.
In my collektion:
Gracie fields - I Belong to Glasgow
Gracie Fields o/Phil - Green Now Is The Hour
Gracie Fields - Sally
Gracie Fields - She Fought Like A Tiger For Her 'onour
Gracie Fields - The Biggest Aspidistra In The World
Well Ampico had to upload this even though its not one of my favourities its for those who love it and no Gracie collection would be complete without it from 1938 the original recording.
Iam a Canadian, born in 1941 and became familiar with this song due to my mother who was always singing. Just today, I mentioned to a neighbour that she had given to me, for Christmas, "the biggest aspidistra in the world". Needless to say, she didn't know that it was a compliment. Actually she gave me the biggest cyclamen in the world. Thanks mom!
Still got my Mum's Aspidistra, although a shadow of its former glory. I have had it for 40 years now. Having it in the office at work turned out to be a bad idea as it did not like cold coffee too much!
