Cash takes Marty Robins and strips away the romanticism from it without changing any of the words. Amazing what a change of voice and a diffrent guitar. Less jangly upbeat triumphant and more someone tired of all the dirtiness in the world and warning people from it.

It's said war - war never changes. Men do, through the roads they walk. And this road - has reached it's end.

Marty Robbin's version is good for scouring the Mojave and killing deathclaws, this one fits Red Dead 2 much better, Johnny's ragged voice suits the last chapter of Arthur Morgan's tale.

I imagine some 30-40 years into the future, after the events of NV. Once young and fiery courier, full of fire and will for a fight, now worn and rugged by the passage of time, facing one more rogue renegade in a duel of honor. When the clock strikes twelve, they both fire, and fall, exactly at the same time. The renegade, threatening the unknown town and its fair people in need of a hero, had fallen. The couriers bullet piercing the young heart of the youngster, striking him down immediately. But, at the same time, so had the old courier taken a dosage of lead. And as he lays there on the ground, a hole in his chest, he goes back to his memories in youth. All the people he met, the folks he helped and the foes he defeated...one final good deed before meeting the reaper, and facing the inevitable that he had coming eventually. Rarely people get to grow old in the west, especially when living in a world where young die first. Rest easy, cowboy. You did your part, and you did good. The mojave will carry out your name, your deeds and the legacy you left behind. Now you may rest there, where once you escaped death. Goodsprings, and its people welcome you back home.

I liked this version for different reasons than I like Marty Robbins' original. This one, like quite a few of Cash's songs (especially later on) has a mournful tone to it. The mental image that Robbins' song brought to mind a mysterious lawman who unexpectedly bested an infamous outlaw. But this one? The Ranger is...scary. I actually felt pity for Texas Red. The way the original song built him up as an infamous and skilled gunfighter that had killed twenty men despite being only twenty-four years old now seems like a way to drive in how unstoppable the Ranger truly was. Texas Red never had a chance, and he didn't even have the time to realize it. He died literally before he could even fully draw his pistol. And...that was it. No jubilation among the townsfolk. He just left. He had his bounty. After all, he had just been after Texas Red. After Texas Red...

And so the courier who had cheated death in the cemetery outside Goodsprings cheated death once again. And the Mojave wasteland was forever changed.

This version should've been the credits theme of New Vegas. Reminiscing all the kickassery you did.

Marty Robbins version takes place while the Ranger is fighting Texas Red, Johnny Cash' version takes place years later as an old story being told

This version make me think of the ranger after Texas Red and he’s retired. A much more dangerous outlaw comes to town and everyone calls in him for help. After refusing many times, he gets up and cleans his pistol to overcome another challenger for the last time. Everyone shivers in anticipation as the ranger takes out one more outlaw before his death days later.

Imagine Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash singing this together? Marty singing the parts about The Ranger and Johnny singing the parts about Texas Red.

Marty Robbins: A John Wayne Epic about a virtuous lawman hunting down a depraved criminal and putting an end to his reign of terror. Johnny Cash: An old soldier, wandering around in a world that doesn't understand or want him anymore, fighting one last fight against another stupid kid who wanted to make his name with some lead.

This one brings about a much darker tone, as if the ranger was in actual danger, while the Marty Robins version made it seem like the ranger was sure to win, while this one sounds like the ranger could die.

This version is like an old soldier gearing up for one last gunfight. The overconfidence of youth is long behind him, but he knows what he must do- even if he’s not coming back from this one

Marty Robbin’s version is like an episode of the Lone Ranger. Cash’s version is like True Grit.

Marty Robin's version: about the ranger when he was in his 20's Johny Cash version: about the ranger when he was in his 60's Edit: I just read this and thought wow, kinda of a cool comparison. Then I realized this is my comment that I wrote 6 months ago, wow.
