They have one other full length from 1993, "Focus". Every song is genius. Same goes for the 1990 and 1991 Cynic Demos. These sound a lot like Death's "Human" album. I personally don't care too much for the 88 and 89 demos. The 1995 demo by Portal is also worth tracking down, it has most of the Focus line-up. The band members were also involved in or guest appeared on many classic metal albums by bands like Death, Pestilence, Aghora, Atheist and Monstrosity. Check the cynicalsphere website.

Hah Machine elf metal anyone? Well the cover art looks like a DMT hallucination anyways. And the lyrics are trippy as well so yeah. Its funny how Dead Letter Circus is also inspired by DMT as they do have some similarities in tone and sound and cover art. But Cynic is older and alot more prog.

It's very beautiful. It's a pity they didn't get on they made some amazing and underrated experimental music. There's some really nice work here. This kind of music is so needed in a very monochromatic world at the moment.

this album sounds like a dream of wonderful controlled dynamic chaos to me, I've always been entranced by the poetry as well. it all blends together so well..

The Space For This Space, raise my arms Space, wake my eyes Space, grace my heart Can I be the space for this Soft omens Traced in air Phantom warnings Disassembling the captain’s chair Can I be the space for this Will I be the space for this Breathe out, breathe in Out of ruins We’ve haunted like owls The future druids Drop the crystal goblet forming spells Can I be the space for this Will I be the space for this Breathe in, breathe out Must I bend the sky to realize A bundle of thoughts On a dirty cloth perfumed To tell you who you are A bundle of thoughts On a lonely ghost pursuit Lost inside the space for this Raise my arms Space, wake my eyes Space, grace my heart Can I be the space for this Will I be the space for this Breathe in, breathe out Must I bend the sky to realize Can I be the space for this (I will) Will I be the space for this Must I bend the sky to recognize I can be the space for this I will be the space for this I am now the space for this I am now the space for this I just bend the sky and realize

Ehh, you could make the argument for Focus being Technical Death Metal, but really, Cynic is, in general, more progressive than technical. Atheist fits the idea of "Technical" a little more strongly. At that point, though, you're really just splitting hairs on the whole genre categorization thing. While I find genres good for describing the sound of a band, as well as retracing musical history and influences, I find it's bad to pigeonhole any band into a single genre to start with.

Revisiting all of these great masterpieces. Why? Because I am a drummer and my biggest influence ever just passed. RIP Sean. You pioneered death metal drumming.

"Cynic: A member of a group of ancient Greek philosophers who taught that virtue constitutes happiness and that self-control is the essential part of virtue." ie. not the modern meaning. I mean, honestly... this is written on the first page of their (old) official website.

"Screamo" and "Death Metal" are two different things. Screamo is a derivative of emotive hardcore that formed and gained popularity in the early 2000s. Death Metal developed in the late eighties out of Thrash metal. What we have here is progressive death metal, which applies the progressive rock mindset to death metal. So no, this is not a "screamo" band, nor do they incorporate "Screamo elements". The band Cynic, in fact, predates the screamo genre entirely.

I'd would give that particular honour to Esoteric's "The Maniacal Vale" or Coldworld's "Melancholie²" myself.
