Kerry Livgren is a genius, this is the best musical piece ever to be written.

This song is, in my opinion, THE quintessential prog rock song. It is huge and has a cinematic feel and vibe to it, thanks to the virtuosic songwriting ability of one Kerry Livgren and the musical interpretive ability of all the band members of Kansas. There have been other great prog rock songs to be sure, but I don't think this one can be topped by any band. The early incarnation of Kansas had written and performed many fantastic songs and I love them all, but A Song For America is my favorite by a long shot.

I saw them in concert 8th row center as a girl of 16 years old. It was incredible. I smile whenever I play this really, really loud.

Some pretty sophisticated synth sounds for 1975 don't you think?

Kerry Livgren doesn't just write songs. He writes ANTHEMS! This one should be the official rock national anthem. At least it is for me.

There are some songs that are the perfect example of what their genre is about and what it entails. This is one of them.

So incredibly good on every level. Kansas has not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a wrong that must made right.

Unfortunately this is the shortened version. The original returns to the main theme at 7:28, which to me is key to the evolution of the song.

The intro...always amazes me. Always, no matter how many times I've listened to it. That's TRUE AMAZING music!

I was born in Topeka Kansas, this is Music from the Heart Land, far beyond Rock n Roll, these guys were Decades ahead of their time.

how ironic that all these years later the message of taking care of the globe still hasn't settled in. Kerry tried to make people think long ago. But mankind is too stupid to save this earth. shame.

Every time I listen to this song, I hear something different than I heard the last time. I don't know if anyone else has ever caught this, but the spacey theme (1:58-2:22 and outro) is polymetric. The violin is actually playing in 7/8 time while the rest of the instruments are in 4/4. Count it out and you'll hear it. Just a little something that makes this some even more incredible than it already is. This is one of the most well-composed pieces of progressive rock ever to exist.
