Brother did have hard times. A blind black man growing up parentless in the south during Jim Crow and segregation...." Who knows better than I?" Not a damn soul

I first heard Ray Charles when I was 12 years old. As a white kid living on a farm, I knew this was no Pat Boone. His music entranced me and over the next almost half century, I saw him many times in concert. I bought almost every album he put out and today, in my 70's I still listen to the genius. I find him more relevant the older I get. He had a way of speaking to people of all ages and races. He is irreplaceable and sorely missed by millions.

I wish I could've seen him perform live, one of my biggest inspirations to play piano

My mother told me before she passed away, Said, "Son, when I'm gone, don't forget to pray 'Cause there'll be hard times, hard times - Who knows better than I?" Well I soon found out just what she meant When I had to pawn my clothes just to pay the rent; Talkin' 'about hard times, hard times Who knows better than I? I had a woman, Lord, who was always around, But when I lost my money, she put me down. Talkin' 'bout hard times, you know those hard times, Yeah, Lord, who knows better than I? Lord, one of these days, there'll be no sorrow When I pass away, And no more hard times, Yeah, yeah, who knows better than I? Yeah, Lord, who knows better than I?

Oh my god. This song is so amazing. The lyrics compelling and the emotion he sings and plays with let's you know it was for real. That line about pawning his clothes to pay the rent is iconic to me. People don't write songs like this anymore. RIP King Ray.
