According to Betty Thatcher (Newsinger), who wrote the band's lyrics, "Black Flame" is about the Vietnam war. And I'd say it fits.

well, they didn't fly completely under the radar because I remember hearing them on FM radio back in the mid-1970s and enjoying them whenever the DJ played them. I think they may have been on the King Biscuit Flour Hour as well. Anyway, I have not heard this song for close to 40 years and it popped into my head today so I thought I might find it here... thanks for posting it!

I'm stunned to only have recently discovered this truly amazing band even though I've been a rock/prog rock fan for ages. Just about the complete volume of their output is really AAA work and I suggest to anyone that just bumped onto this page to really check them out.

Been a fan of Renaissance since 1972 and have seen them in concert about 5 or 6 times as recently as last summer. Annie Haslam with her 5 octave vocal range is probably the best female singer I have ever heard. Micheal Dunford is an accomplished guitar player and song writer. If you get a chance to see them live do so. Listening to Annie's voice alone is worth the price of admission alone!

This band is before my time, I was born in 78, and discovered them in 90 something, but good music transcends generations, and their music will live on

classy! Annie is one reason I don't give a shit about American Idol. Such a joke compared to this.

Exactly Correct! Discovered them in the mid- late 70's. Nothing compares! Thanks for the channel.

I think I know the reason this song is so popular for a lesser known album track. Back in 1975, Renaissance performed on Don Kirchner's Rock Concert TV Show. This was just about the time the U.S. FM radio stations were starting to play them. The two songs the did were "Can You Understand" and "Black Flame". For a lot of people, me included, this was their first chance to see this band perform. Those fans that watched that night will always remember those two songs.

I'm glad that they don't make music like this anymore! It keeps drawing us back to when music was great! Long live classic rock, especially progressive rock!

I saw them open for Gentle Giant in 76. It was a dream concert. Her beauty & angelic voice sent my soul soaring! Heavenly!
