I caught a Renaissance concert in a coffeehouse in Philadelphia in 1972. It was an experience I will never forget. Annie Haslam was dressed in red velvet, floor length gown that enhanced her beauty a thousand fold. The sound they produced is second to none.

"An old man stands by the side of the grave And this man's heart is to heavy to pray For he is numb with the pain Of the love that he couldn't share" I find it a remarkable song for the time.

On the first three albums they purposely quoted a few classical pieces, but mostly as isolated quotes (as far as I remember: the beginning of Prologue - Chopin; This song; Can You Understand quotes Dr Zhivago; At the Harbor - Debussy; a phrase in Running Hard is by Jehan Alain; and Cold is Being is based on Albinoni's "Adagio in G minor"). All credit was usually given, and after clones emerged, stopped by 1975. Most classical pianists interpret others music, they showed they could do it too.

Killer bass line. He was a man just a simple man His thoughts and pleasures were few His bread he shared with his father That was the life that he knew And how the snow fell in Kiev today And how the wind drove the mourners away Now there is only one man at the grave of Davorian And this man's heart is to heavy to pray Nah Nah... Nah nah... He was a man just a simple man Died at the place of his birth His tombstone shared by the family A silent place on the earth An old man stands by the side of the grave And this man's heart is too heavy to pray For he is numb with the pain Of the love that he couldn't share Until he diead there in Kiev today Dah dah dah... Nah nah nah... He was a man just a simple man Died at the place of his birth His tombstone shared by the family A silent place on the earth An old man stands by the side of the grave And this man's heart is to heavy to pray For he is numb with the pain Of the love that he couldn't share And two men died there in Kiev today

This is probably one of the most epic pieces of music I have ever heard in any genre. Dear God.

They didn't receive the props they deserved, so I agree that they are the number 1 most under rated 70's band ever. I listened to them since the 70's, but few people I know in my age group today know of them. They were played on FM progressive rock or college radio stations.

Whoa!!!...When Annie's vocals first come in!!!..and then that one harmony at 1:51...a brief spiritual orgasm, for me anyway.....It's no wonder why i've loved this band all along....I once met Annie Haslam at a King Crimson concert back in 84, on New York's westside Pier Six, she just happened to be standing directly behind me. She actually seemed glad that someone finally recognized her. Her "Annie" necklace was a dead giveaway. I was starstruck, lost all my senses..won't ever forget it.

When I saw them in Milwaukee in the 1970s I was unaware of their roots. I have heard echos of their cover of "Forever Autumn" every fall as I crunch through fallen leaves fondly recalling with gratitude, loves lost and how life goes on. Thanks for letting my mind travel back those 40 years!
