I love this song! I used to hate it, but it really grew on me. All the noise really demonstrates the chaos going on and I really love narrative songs. The uniqueness of this song is why I love it so much!
After the quiet introduction to the album I remember nearly jumping out of my skin when I heard the first few seconds of this song. It sounded like nothing I had ever heard from S&G, or from the 1960s for that matter. I can only imagine how people back in 1968 reacted to it.
The riveting sound of the bass keys on a Moog synthesizer really nailed me before I really knew what a synthesizer was back in the late '60s when I first heard this. That, along with the heavily echoed gospel choir and dark story of this recording, really make it stand out for its unique brilliance.
"When darkness fell, excitement kissed the crowd
And made them wild
In an atmosphere of freaky holiday.
When the spotlight hit the boy,
The crowd began to cheer,
He flew away."
Can't believe people cheer for suicidal people to jump
Before reading your comment, I had never really listened to the choir. I agree; it is insane. I think the sound is supposed to represent the murmuring and cacophony of the crowd gathered watching the boy. This is a very interesting song. It is almost a short story.
I remember listening to these guys with huge head phones on at my dad's house, lol. I listened to them over & over for hours until he'd finally have to turn it off so I would eat. Then right back to the stereo. S&G were the reason I fell in love with music, & they were the musical geniuses of their time..
It's just amazing. The first time I ever heard a Moog synthesizer, and the mix on the gospel singers in full on " bus return" through the mixing board, with Roy Halee at the controls (not mixed with the original vocal track, just the vocal signals going into the reverb plates) was production magic. This album still brings tears to my eyes because of the goosebumps it still gives me.
